Bushland track athlete Slade Perry was named the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week for April 6-13 after winning three events at the area track meet. Perry clinched first place in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and aided in securing a gold medal for the Falcons' 4x100-meter relay team. Gathering 61.34% of the total votes, he received 1,950 votes out of 3,164 cast.
The award is open to varsity athletes from all sports with the restriction that they can only win once per season per sport, and athletes from the same school cannot win for more than three consecutive weeks. Nominations for the Athlete of the Week award are accepted until 5 p.m. each Saturday through email at [email protected], requiring detailed statistics from the week's games. The voting period for the weekly recognition concludes every Thursday, with Perry leading the latest round with his outstanding performance in track and field. Other top contenders included Sierra and Willow Cornell from Amarillo High girls track & field and Saphina Stanley from Tascosa girls track & field, highlighting the competitive field of high school athletes in the region.
