The Springfield High softball team faced challenges last season due to limited players, with injuries posing a significant threat to the team's dynamic. This season, a new co-op with Lanphier and Southeast schools has increased the team's roster and moved them up to Class 4A, providing more opportunities for players, especially in JV games.
The co-op has been beneficial for all sides, offering more options, competitive opportunities, and mentorship for players like Maya Bennett and Annabell Force. Senior pitcher Mia Volpert, committed to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, sees the co-op as a chance to build something new and important for the district, paving the way for future generations to continue playing together under the District 186 umbrella. The agreement, approved by the school board in January, reflects a positive step forward for the program after years of being overlooked.
