The Portland Hearts of Pine will face Rhode Island FC in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Lewiston High on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Hearts of Pine secured their spot after a thrilling comeback victory against Hartford Athletic, progressing from the first round where they defeated CD Faialense 4-0. Rhode Island FC, with a record of 1-2-1 in USL Championship, last played on April 5, winning 3-0 against Oakland Roots.
Portland has since played two USL League One away games, drawing 0-0 with Spokane Velocity and suffering their first loss, 2-1, against South Georgia Tormenta FC. The Hearts of Pine introduced new starters in these matches, including goalkeeper Kash Oladapo and midfielder Nathaniel James. The U.S. Open Cup features a mix of professional and amateur teams with 64 pro teams and 32 amateur teams.
