Ocean Rowing Record Broken by Two Women - Forced to Halt Journey After Heavy Storm Damages Boat

By Scores.wiki Staff · March 25, 2026 at 09:36 PM ET

Two women attempting a non-stop row across the Pacific Ocean had to abandon their journey after just eight days due to storm damage. Miriam Payne and Jess Rowe departed from Lima, Peru, aiming to cover 8,000 miles to Australia. However, they encountered steering issues and discovered that the rudder of their boat, Velocity, had completely snapped.

The crew, both in their twenties, made the decision to return to Lima for repairs in the interest of safety. Despite the setback, they remain determined to resume their historic quest to be the first women's team and pair to row the entire Pacific unsupported. The team, known as Seas the Day, is raising funds for The Outward Bound Trust, a UK charity focusing on teaching essential life skills through adventure.
