By Scores.wiki Staff · March 25, 2026 at 09:37 PM ET

MLB umpire Hunter Wendelstedt was struck by a line drive to the head while working first base during the Minnesota Twins versus New York Mets game. The incident occurred in the seventh inning with the Twins leading 3-0 when Mets outfielder Tyrone Taylor hit the line drive, causing Wendelstedt to fall to the ground. Video footage showed the ball striking Wendelstedt on the left side of his head.

Medical staff promptly attended to Wendelstedt as he lay on the field following the impact. Although he was able to walk off with assistance and did not return to the game, his condition was not immediately disclosed. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned he was informed Wendelstedt was "fine" post-game, expressing relief and concern for the umpire's well-being. The Twins eventually triumphed over the Mets with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings, managed by a three-man umpiring crew following Wendelstedt's departure. Wendelstedt, a seasoned MLB umpire in his 28th season, previously officiated the 2014 World Series.
