The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in overtime in the regular-season finale. Scott Laughton scored the game-winning goal just 56 seconds into the extra period. Auston Matthews, Philippe Myers, and Chris Tanev also scored for the Maple Leafs, who finished the season at 52-26-4 and will face the Ottawa Senators in Game 1.

For Detroit (39-35-8), Justin Holl, Austin Watson, and Alex DeBrincat found the back of the net. The Red Wings missed the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season, with only the Buffalo Sabres having a longer playoff drought at 14 years. Tanev's late goal tied the game at 3-3 after the Maple Leafs trailed 3-1 entering the third period.

Toronto coach Craig Berube is optimistic about the return of injured players Jake McCabe, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and David Kampf for Game 1 against Ottawa. The Maple Leafs clinched the Atlantic Division title, marking their third division title in the post-1967 expansion era and the first in a full season since 1999-00.
