Hilary Knight of Team USA set a new record for most assists in IIHF Women’s World Championship history with 50 assists, surpassing Hayley Wickenheiser's previous record of 49. Knight achieved this milestone during a game against Switzerland by providing two assists in the first period and another in the second period to help her team secure a 4-0 victory. The 35-year-old forward already held the records for most goals (67) and points (117) in the tournament, making her the most successful athlete in the competition with a total of 14 medals, including nine gold and five silver.
With six points in four games, Knight is currently second in scoring at the tournament, trailing only Marie-Philip Poulin of Canada. Her teammate Kendall Coyne Schofield is also among the top assist leaders in the history of the championship with 48 assists. Team USA, the top seed in the competition, recently defeated Canada 2-1 and is set to compete in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The gold medal game, anticipated to feature another Canada-USA clash, will take place on Sunday.
