Unveiled: Aston Villa vs PSG Europa League Anthem Blunder Reason

By Scores.wiki Staff · March 25, 2026 at 09:37 PM ET

A system malfunction led to the Europa League anthem being mistakenly played instead of the Champions League anthem before the quarter-final match between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park. The error caused confusion among players and fans, with the automated system responsible for playing the anthem crashing and being overridden by another system. Villa defender Ezri Konsa's reaction, facepalming and shaking his head in disbelief, captured the moment of the blunder.

Despite the anthem mix-up, PSG managed to secure a 3-2 victory on the night, but Villa's spirited comeback was not enough to overcome their 5-4 aggregate loss to the French team. Uefa's regulations do not specify sanctions for incorrect anthems being played, placing the responsibility on clubs to ensure the correct anthem is played. The Europa League anthem, introduced in the 2018-19 season, is a recent addition to the competition, with its composition and use in the Conference League also noted.
