In 2025, UND football will introduce in-helmet communication for quarterbacks, a first in program history. Offensive coordinator Isaac Fruechte has been utilizing this technology during spring practices to streamline play calls and enhance communication with the players. The system allows for a more efficient exchange of information while maintaining visibility of sideline signals.
Previously permitted only for games against FBS programs in 2024, all FCS teams, including UND, will adopt in-helmet communication for the upcoming season. The technology, familiar to Fruechte from his NFL background, aims to simplify communication for quarterbacks like Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson, who used it at San Diego State. During spring ball, three quarterbacks are currently using the system, with a fourth set to join once recovered from injury.
Fruechte emphasizes a minimalist approach to play calls, focusing on essential information to prevent overloading the quarterbacks. He also provides situational reminders to aid decision-making on the field. The communication link between coach and quarterback will be cut off with 15 seconds left on the play clock by a third-party official. The team's progress with this new system will be showcased at the upcoming UND Spring Showcase event.
