Notre Dame QB Angeli Entering Transfer Portal Sparks Controversy

Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli is set to enter the NCAA transfer portal, as confirmed by a source to ESPN. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound passer has played in 20 games over three years at Notre Dame, accumulating 772 yards with a 72.5% completion rate, 10 touchdowns, and one interception. Entering his redshirt junior season, Angeli has two seasons of eligibility left.

Angeli notably stepped in for an injured teammate during a crucial moment in a CFP semifinal game against Penn State, leading a scoring drive. He made his first career start in the Sun Bowl against Oregon State, throwing for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a decisive victory. His departure as a graduate transfer could pave the way for CJ Carr, a highly-ranked quarterback recruit in the 2024 ESPN 300, to potentially take over the starting role in his redshirt freshman year.

Competing for the starting position are also Kenny Minchey, a top recruit in the 2023 ESPN 300, and Carr, grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman acknowledged the competition among the three quarterbacks, expressing confidence in their abilities to lead the team. Angeli's move to the transfer portal was initially reported by 247Sports.
