The Commanders are nearing a $3 billion agreement with the District of Columbia to establish a new stadium for the NFL team at the RFK Stadium site, where they previously played from 1961 to 1996 before relocating to Landover, Maryland. The proposed stadium location, situated 2 miles east of the U.S. Capitol, is expected to become the team's new home.
According to reports by Mark Seagraves of NBC Washington, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Commanders have outlined the key elements of the deal. The team is anticipated to cover a significant portion of the construction costs amounting to around $2.5 billion, while the District would contribute $850 million towards capital expenses and supporting infrastructure for the 180-acre project. The District's financial commitment is set to be disbursed in installments, with $500 million scheduled between 2026 and 2030, followed by an additional $350 million to be paid in 2032 through taxes generated from the development.
The agreement aims for the completion of the new stadium by the commencement of the 2030 NFL season, marking a significant milestone in the Commanders' potential return to the city.
