During a White House celebration for the Ohio State Buckeyes, JD Vance fumbled the college football National Championship Trophy while attempting to lift it up. The incident occurred as the ceremony concluded on the White House's South Lawn following Ohio State's victory in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The base of the 35-pound trophy detached as Vance and Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson raised it while the White House band played Queen's "We are the Champions." Fortunately, another teammate prevented the trophy from falling to the ground.
The college football trophy, standing at 26.5 inches tall and made of gold, bronze, and stainless steel, features a 12-inch base with a hand-rubbed black patina finish. Crafted by UAP Polich Tallix, an American fine art foundry, the trophy's mishap occurred during the celebratory event at the White House.
