Steve Gentry, a former state champion coach with over 250 wins in his career, has returned to Withrow as the head boys basketball coach, moving from Purcell Marian where he spent two seasons. Gentry previously coached at Withrow from 2000-2005 and achieved success with Deer Park, leading them to their first-ever boys basketball state championship in 2018 with a perfect season.
During his tenure at Purcell Marian, Gentry improved the team's performance significantly, culminating in a Division V district championship in the past season with a 14-11 record. With experience coaching at various schools and securing seven district titles and four conference championships, Gentry's return to Withrow aims to revitalize the struggling team, which finished 3-18 in the previous season. Athletic Director Regina Williams expressed enthusiasm for Gentry's appointment, citing his track record in developing student-athletes and instilling a sense of 'Tiger Pride' in the program.
