Paul Skenes and Henry Davis of the Pittsburgh Pirates made history by becoming the first pitcher/catcher battery in Major League history comprised of players selected first overall in the draft. Skenes bounced back from a tough start by allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out six in six innings as the Pirates defeated the Washington Nationals 10-3, snapping a three-game losing streak. Despite committing a couple of errors on defense, Skenes had a solid outing against the Nationals.
The Pirates' offense came alive with Oneil Cruz scoring twice and Enmanuel Valdez and Ke'Bryan Hayes each driving in three runs. Bryan Reynolds contributed with two RBIs, while Andrew McCutchen made a spectacular sliding catch in right field. The Pirates' 10-run output marked a season-high, as they had struggled offensively in the early part of the season. Washington's Brad Lord endured a tough outing, allowing four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. The series continues with Jake Irvin of the Nationals facing Mitch Keller of the Pirates on Tuesday.
